Abstract

Two different algorithms for modelling numerically soil water freezing/thawing were implemented into the SVAT scheme called LSPM (Cassardo et al., 1995) and validated by observations from Arpa Piemonte. Soil water freezing/thawing affects soil moisture simulation and thus the energy and hydrological balance estimation in the surface layer, with practical effects in many fields (meteorology, hydrology, agrometeorology, etc.)
