High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) of ZnO obtained by combustion of Zn metal (Kadox), shows that the microcrystals have prismatic habit. Each microcrystal is a perfect single crystal exposing faces of high perfection. The CO is adsorbed on Zn2+ ions of these faces giving, at maximum coverage a very narrow CO stretching peak (half width 1.5 cm−1) at 2168.5 cm−1. By decreasing the coverage the main band shifts to 2190 cm−1. The process occurs in steps, so indicating that in the 0-θmax interval a few ordered bidimensional phases are present
