This article shows that hydroxyl radicals adsorbed on the surface of TiO2 (Ti-.OH groups) account for about 70–100% of the photocatalytic peroxidation of linoleic acid under UVB irradiation, which results into malondialdehyde production. The experimental data are silent concerning the involvement of 1O2 in the process, although an upper limit of 30% can be hypothesized, while an involvement of surface-bound holes into the lipoperoxidation process can be excluded.

Abstract

This article shows that hydroxyl radicals adsorbed on the surface of TiO2 (Ti-.OH groups) account for about 70–100% of the photocatalytic peroxidation of linoleic acid under UVB irradiation, which results into malondialdehyde production. The experimental data are silent concerning the involvement of 1O2 in the process, although an upper limit of 30% can be hypothesized, while an involvement of surface-bound holes into the lipoperoxidation process can be excluded.
