This survey has many purposes. First of all, we analyzed whether the economic performance in a continent had an influence on the demand trend for the transportation of airline passengers in the same geographical area. These continents are the ones which could interest the companies operated in the air transport sector, where a high increase of market demand can be detected. Secondly, our attention concentrated on the European market, in order to check the influence of world demand for the transportation of airline passengers on the European trend. The subject of the survey has been identified through the analysis of existing literature, both at national and international level. In particular, apart from specific treaties, more than one hundred and fifty articles published on national and international journals were analyzed, split among specialized journals, economic and financial magazines and management reviews. With reference to the different purposes of the survey, the data referred to the economic performances in the different continents came from important research institutes, which periodically issue the annual trends of the main economic parameters in order to analyze “the health conditions” of an economy. Market came from important professional societies and market surveys agencies active in the air transport field. In addition, for each target research, a ratio has been created (for a total of three ratios) which allowed us to carry out a quantity analysis of the considered aspect. This research has shown that the economic trend of a continent, examined on a time frame of twenty years, has an influence on the demand trend for the transportation of airline passengers shown in such geographic area. Furthermore, with reference to Europe, we could notice an influence from the world demand of air passenger transport on the European trend. Europe is influenced by world performance, even if the continents leading the world growth are the emerging ones. Possible implication of the research activity can be drawn from the above stated findings. Continents have been identified as having a higher level of response for what concerns the demand of the transportation of airline passengers in relation to their Gross Domestic Product. Such continents are those which may mostly concern companies acting in the air transport field, because they experience a higher increase of market demand. Simultaneously, the continents featuring a higher capability to generate a high air traffic have been identified, because of the available infrastructure. Such continents represent geographical areas where investment in airport facilities would be cost-effective, because of their capability to generate traffic in airport infrastructures.
