In 1867 Judith Gautier, the young daughter of the well-known French poet Théophile Gautier, published The Book of Jade (Le Livre de Jade), a volume of renditions of chinese lyrics, most of them originally written in the golden age of chinese poetry, during the Tang dynasty. The essay analyses the Gautier’s anthology and its translations into Portuguese (1870; 1890) and Italian (1882) language. The essay tries also to focus the contribution made by all these texts to the inclusion of chinese culture and poetry into the patterns of Western imagination.
