The family of child with Pervasive Developmental disorder (PDD) lives every day a particular situation connected with the features of the disorder, especially to the difficulty of interaction and communication with subject apparently detached and unable to express his needs. The various and frequently ambivalent emotions, the financial difficulties and the social implications of everyday life with an autistic child have been analyzed through the application of the “Impact on Family Scale”; the answers given by representative sample of parents of children with PDD have been compared with the ones given by parents of Down’s children. It’s evident from the answers’ comparison that quality of life of families with an autistic son is much more compromised, in particularly as regards the personal, relational and organizational aspects while the coping strategies are usually the same independently from disabilities (couple’s union, dialogue, information, learning to take care of the son).
