We compare dynamic taxonomies with the other main approaches to information access and discuss analogies and differences. The approaches we analyze range from traditional retrieval paradigms, such as queries on structured data, to the most recent approaches, including the current effort on the Semantic Web: • queries on structured data, and OLAP data analysis techniques; • information retrieval on textual material, and recent extensions such as dynamic clustering and term suggestion; • static taxonomies, and multidimensional taxonomies without concept composition; • decision trees; • Formal Concept Analysis (FCA), and • Description Logics and the Semantic Web.
