Current political parties tend towards formlessness. At this historic stage of their existence, their distinctive feature is the absence of form, the propensity to take up any position. If, on the contrary, the nature of political parties were, paradoxically, to give form to a formless societal body (Gramsci’s famous “whalebones in the corset”), then one would have to infer that political parties do not exist. Currently, there are no political parties. The question whether there is still room for political parties coincides to a great extent with this other question, namely: Is there still room for ideas, therefore for philosophy within politics?

Abstract

Current political parties tend towards formlessness. At this historic stage of their existence, their distinctive feature is the absence of form, the propensity to take up any position. If, on the contrary, the nature of political parties were, paradoxically, to give form to a formless societal body (Gramsci’s famous “whalebones in the corset”), then one would have to infer that political parties do not exist. Currently, there are no political parties. The question whether there is still room for political parties coincides to a great extent with this other question, namely: Is there still room for ideas, therefore for philosophy within politics?
