This paper illustrates the origins, results achieved and future prospects of the Italian Linguistic Atlas, a work begun in 1924 by linguist Matteo Bartoli and scholar Ugo Pellis and now directed by Lorenzo Massobrio.The first part deals with the structure of the atlas questionnaire, the choice of points to be covered and the 1009 field surveys, followed by a brief presentation of the already published nine volumes, with some information about the new digital storage of linguistic data. The last part illustrates some linguistic and ethnolinguistic maps to show the relevance of the Italian Linguistic Atlas as an instrument for further research in Italian and romance dialectology
