Eggplant is the third most important Solanaceous crop after potato and tomato. A reference genome sequence of S. melongena was produced by sequencing an inbred line (67/3) with Illumina technology at 246 X-fold coverage. The assembly consists of 23,039 scaffolds (NG50=752 Kbp) for a total length of 1.29 Gbp. To anchor the assembly to chromosomes, a physical map covering 840Mb was generated using BioNano technology and a genetic map was generated using a mapping population of 167 F6 RILs. Gene annotation assisted by RNA-seq produced a catalog of 39,921 genes models and 43,579 transcripts. This high quality genome assembly and annotation clarifies the genome organization of eggplant and will produce new tools and markers for accelerating eggplant breeding, as well as comparative genomic analyses.
