The presence of epithelial desquamation, erythema, and erosions on the gingival tissue is usually described in literature as desquamative gingivitis (DG). A wide range of autoimmune/dermatological disorders can manifest as DG, although the two more common are oral lichen planus and mucous membrane pemphigoid. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of 11 periodonto-pathogenic microorganisms in DG cases and to compare it with microbiologic status of individuals affected by plaque-induced gingivitis (GI).

Abstract

The presence of epithelial desquamation, erythema, and erosions on the gingival tissue is usually described in literature as desquamative gingivitis (DG). A wide range of autoimmune/dermatological disorders can manifest as DG, although the two more common are oral lichen planus and mucous membrane pemphigoid. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of 11 periodonto-pathogenic microorganisms in DG cases and to compare it with microbiologic status of individuals affected by plaque-induced gingivitis (GI).
