Abstract

We offer a preliminary survey on the initiatives of international promotion of Italian mathematics coordinated by the Academy of Italy. Special attention is devoted to the travels and study sojourns abroad that this institution, and its annexed Volta Foundation, patronized. Particular relevance will be given to the experiences of three ‘ambassadors of science and Italianness’: Severi, Fantappié and Minetti. Severi was charged to exalt the Italian mathematical primacy in their travels across Europe, Japan and South America. Fantappié and Minetti, Volta fellows in the Thirties, were sent to Germany and France in order to refine their training and to attest the successes of the fascist cultural policy
