Memorie di luoghi e di mestieri: l’attività carbonifera nella toponimia orale del Piemonte montano

The article examines dialectal place names referring to the now extinct activity of the production of charcoal. It considers their numerical consistency and their spatial spread in the areas of mountain Piedmont, on the basis of the documentation offered by the Atlante Toponomastico del Piemonte Montano. Analyzing on a qualitative level the most recurrent toponymic types, it illustrates the predominant traits in the charcoal exploitation of the territory perceived as more salient by the speaking communities and settled in their toponymic systems.
