This work aims at defining guidelines for the conservation intervention on a wall painting coming from the Restoration Laboratory of the archaeological site of Pompeii (Italy) through an interdisciplinary approach. The painting shows a trompe l’œil marble representation probably decorating a room of a residential building, and can be traced back to an initial phase of the II Pompeian style. The choice of the materials and their careful processing suggest a high pictorial quality. The painting is fixed on a modern panel, which allows to date a previous intervention to the 80s-90s of the 20th century. The absence of residues of wax-based maintenance products widely used on in situ wall paintings in the Vesuvian area suggests that recovery took place soon after the discovery. The conservation condition mainly required cleaning and surface consolidation. Evaluation of materials and methods of intervention was carried out comparing traditional and innovative systems, primarily on mock-ups produced in the laboratory and after on some testing areas on the painted surface.
