Spermatozoa were collected from cat epididymes after routine castration and diluted into one of two extenders containing a final concentration of 20% egg yolk, 5% glycerol and either fructose or glucose. Straws were frozen over liquid nitrogen. Neither the decreases in motility (optic microscope) and in viability (eosin-nigrosin stain) before freezing and at thawing, nor the longevity of spermatozoa incubated at 38°C, showed differences between the two extenders. Motility appeared to decrease at a slower rate with fructose, but this observation needs further confirmation.

Abstract

Spermatozoa were collected from cat epididymes after routine castration and diluted into one of two extenders containing a final concentration of 20% egg yolk, 5% glycerol and either fructose or glucose. Straws were frozen over liquid nitrogen. Neither the decreases in motility (optic microscope) and in viability (eosin-nigrosin stain) before freezing and at thawing, nor the longevity of spermatozoa incubated at 38°C, showed differences between the two extenders. Motility appeared to decrease at a slower rate with fructose, but this observation needs further confirmation.
