The formation of proton-mixed ligand complexes (amine-carboxylic ligand) has been studied potentiometrically, using a (H+)-glass electrode, in aqueous solution, at T = 25-degrees-C. Least squares calculations showed that mixed species of the general formula H(r)A(am) are formed, in which r = 1,2...(m+n-1); m and n are the maximum degree of protonation for carboxylate A and amine am, respectively. For the proton-ethylamine-citrate system, the complex H(r)(cit)(etam)2 (r = 2,3) were also found. The stability of these complexes is discussed as a function of basicity, steric characteristics and charges of the ligands.
