The present paper addresses the possibilities offered by linguistic corpora in editing and improving Teaching Foreign Language materials. It analyses the exposition of grammar contents referring to states of certainty and value judgments in a Spanish FL textbook unit, chosen as a representative model. Then, improvements of the textbook are proposed based upon the evidence provided by the corpus data. This analysis proves that a criterion based on frequency of use in real texts is a good standard for selecting which elements to utilise in the classroom.

Abstract

The present paper addresses the possibilities offered by linguistic corpora in editing and improving Teaching Foreign Language materials. It analyses the exposition of grammar contents referring to states of certainty and value judgments in a Spanish FL textbook unit, chosen as a representative model. Then, improvements of the textbook are proposed based upon the evidence provided by the corpus data. This analysis proves that a criterion based on frequency of use in real texts is a good standard for selecting which elements to utilise in the classroom.
