The contributors of this volume illustrated new findings about the distribution and roles of the peripheral acetylcholine in vertebrates and invertebrates (Bellier and Kimura), the interactions among estrogen receptors and the glutamate receptor that may explain the role of estradiol in initiating intracellular signalling pathways to modulate neuron and glial physiology (Meitzen and Mermelstein), and the role of the protein alpha-synuclein in neurotransmission and synaptic plasticity (Cheng et al.). The neuromodulatory roles of neuropeptides in the normal central nervous system, was described in several system, as the glutamatergic, the GABAergic and the catecholaminergic systems (Merighi et al.), in particular the VGF family (Ferri et al.) and the relaxin 3 system (Smith et al.) are described in greater detail. The importance of monoaminergic systems in the regulation of the vagal stimulation of the cerebral cortex (Ruffoli et al.), the putative role of serotonin in regulating the subventricular zone cell proliferation (Jahanshahi et al.) as well as that of dopamine and GAB (Bovetti et al.) are also discussed in this issue. Finally, recent findings on the alterations of neural circuits in murine models of Down syndrome (Gotti et al.) and Parkinson disease (Vivacqua et al.) are here discussed.
