In this study, we surveyed potential breeding sites of amphibians within the Cumiana municipality (North Western Piedmont). This region includes mountainous, hilly and plain areas and is rich of temporary aquatic habitat (mainly old clay pits) but the distribution and composition of aquatic herpetofauna is poorly studied. Using standard monitoring techniques, we found 42 spawning sites, and nine amphibian species. Italian Crested Newt and Smooth Newt were recorded for the first time in the municipality. Reproductive activity was recorded for Salamandra salamandra, Triturus carnifex, Lissotriton vulgaris, Bufo bufo and B. balearicus, Hyla intermedia, Pelophylax lessonae-esculenta cpx, Rana temporaria and R. dalmatina. The Cumiana municipality has a large number of amphibian species compared to the neighbouring areas, probably because of the high variety of habitats and the existence of many areas with temporary water bodies. Due to the documented and fast aquatic habitat loss in this area, we strongly suggest to include the breeding sites of Triturus carnifex (that could be considered as “umbrella species” for local amphibians) within the Natura 2000 network.

Abstract
Due to the documented and fast aquatic habitat loss in this area, we strongly suggest to include the breeding sites of Triturus carnifex (that could be considered as “umbrella species” for local amphibians) within the Natura 2000 network.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
