The transmission of information has undergone great changes in the last twenty years. As both the global flow of news and that of goods imply extensive use of language, many recent studies enquire about the role of globalisation when analysing linguistic and translation issues. The English language has naturally turned into the key object of such research. The widespread use of the Internet and the technical developments in the realm of media, such as satellite real-time transmission, have given rise to interesting phenomena regarding the global news agenda, the selection and the shaping of news distributed worldwide through global news agencies. The goal of this paper is to analyse the redistribution of a secondary but significant article about a both linguistic and cultural event: the renaming of Danish pastries in Iran into Roses of the Prophet Mohammed, as part of the reaction to the twelve cartoons that were published in the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten. Time pressure, market goals and the extensive use of English as a Lingua Franca can turn the redistribution of a secondary news item into a mere cut-and-paste operation. The analysis of the choices made in selecting raises interesting questions about the consequences of media globalisation and its effects on language and culture.
