In this work, I will try to answer some questions about the European venture capital industry. What is the actual importance of venture capital as a source of funding for European small and medium enterprises? What is the performance of European venture investments with respect to the US? What are the reasons of this performance? What has been the role of public policies in this sector? Eventually, I will present an economic analysis of the venture finance in Europe, attempting to derive specific policy implications.
