In the light of the hermeneutical and theoretical problems emerging from recent studies on the biological thought of Aristotle, the essay wishes to be a modest contribution to the analysis of the interpretations given by some commentators of the XIIIth Century regarding the problems discussed by Aristotle in Book I of the De partibus animalium, In doing so, it will first trace an overview of the current research; then it will clarify the position occupied by the scientia de animalibus in the philosophia naturalis, and, finally, it will define what the statute of this scientia is, and what is the approach to be taken in zoological research, according to what was understood by the medieval scholars regarding the problematic discussion made by the Stagirite.
