The purpose of this article is to describe the conceptual basis for narrative nedicine as an approach to patient-centered aducation and learning tool for nursing students working in a diabetes outpatients clinic. The training programma incorporated developmental and learning thery, longitudinal interactions with individual with diabetes, reflective learning and discussion to explore the experience of ilness. We examined the written work of students who had been asked to analyse the activities observed and to relate on their personal experience. We observed in this pedagogical training that the students had learned to perceive emotional and relational aspects in the patients.
