Does newsgroups "quoting" kill or enhance other types of anaphors?

Messages posted in newsgroups are a written form of text which is not elicited nor academic, a form of written communication which shares some aspects with face-to-face conversation, but is written and web-mediated. A newsgroup thread is a text composed by elementary and eventually second level newsgroup text units. The high number of remarks about OT loops and the frequency with which posters ignore the last posted message (and answer a previous more constructive one) shows that second level newsgroups text units are present in posters’ interpretation of the discussion. The condition of being written and web-mediated increases the opportunities for using anaphoric links, because the methods of online written communication export along with the information a whole set of linking strategies. Some strategies are mid-way between textual deixis and anaphora. As a form of Net Mediated Communication newsgroups have strongly medium-dependent features. They are a written form of text, even more conscious of its written nature than handwriting, with a great amount of planning. Ellipsis is at work also as cohesive device in triadic relations involving subject, quoted part and text of the new message. It works together with other anaphoric devices such as encapsulators, reformulation and pro-forms.
