The volume looks at Eighteenth Century Irish history from different perspectives. The first part discusses how protestants, catholics and presbyterians perceived and represented their respective identitities, and how the Irish peoples dealt with their difficult coexistence dynamics. The second part investigates the origins and development of the Irish debate on tolerance and liberty of conscience, with particular attention to the works of some leading Irish intellectuals such as John Toland and Edmund Burke. The third and last part analyses the political project of the Society of the United Irishmen. In particular, it focuses on the main features of United Irishmen failed attempt to construct a modern, democratic and religiously inclusive nation.
