This paper discusses the concept of theming and some of the ways in which it affects everyday life in contemporary North America. After dating back the origin of American theming to the opening of Disneyland in 1955, the paper looks at the ways specific themes of Italy and Italian culture function as pervasive tropes of simulation in today’s quintessential American themed environment: the city of Las Vegas.
