The aim of this paper is to draw a profile of women entrepreneurs in Italy in the last half century by means of their representation and self-representation of the role of entrepreneur, the way that their businesses are portrayed and the values and ideals on which the business women tell that the companies and the principal associations of women entrepreneurs are founded. In the twentieth century the development of the Italian economy was led by a few big (publicly and privately owned) enterprises and by a myriad of family-owned and controlled small and medium-sized firms. My thesis is that the role of women was determinant for the growth of this family capitalism and for the diffusion of the systems of small businesses, although for a long time these women were neither perceived nor represented themselves as entrepreneurs
