We present evidence on the Italian outward foreign direct investment. We compare it with other outward foreign direct investment statistics in order to measure and characterise its specificity. We use data on the ranking of Multinationals in order to add further considerations to the conclusion of the existence of “abnormal” level of Italian outward forward direct investment first revealed by the macro data analysis. We find evidence of structural differences on firms’ size measured by total assets and number of employees. The parameters of innovative dynamics do not support by per se the underperformance of foreign direct investment outflows. Further empirical work is suggested to study the influence of knowledge transferring in environments such as industrial districts towards external milieus.

Abstract
We present evidence on the Italian outward foreign direct investment. We compare it with other outward foreign direct investment statistics in order to measure and characterise its specificity. We use data on the ranking of Multinationals in order to add further considerations to the conclusion of the existence of “abnormal” level of Italian outward forward direct investment first revealed by the macro data analysis. We find evidence of structural differences on firms’ size measured by total assets and number of employees. The parameters of innovative dynamics do not support by per se the underperformance of foreign direct investment outflows. Further empirical work is suggested to study the influence of knowledge transferring in environments such as industrial districts towards external milieus.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
