The book investigates, by means of a multimodal analysis approach, the ways in which satellite television images can represent a potential danger for intercultural communication and mutual understanding between the two shores of the Mediterranean. This is achieved through two steps. The first is an analysis of the images transiting through these virtual bridges and focusing on the messages they involuntarily generate. The second is to formulate and elaborate possible communicative codes that should be able to represent the diversities that this sea has always embodied and represented. The goal is to show how an alternative to the codes broadcast by leading main-stream media as international satellite TV-chains is not only possible, but can foster mutual understanding in this vital and strategic area of the world.
