The area of Bagnolo Piemonte (CN), that is included in the “Pietra di Luserna” mining basin, is one of the most important Italian areas for the exploitation of gneiss: the correct ore bodies’ management is a necessary duty for a sustainable exploitation of this unrenewable resource. The aim of the research is to give a technical support to Public Administration working out a correct evaluation of rock mass quality on quarry sites and a standard and quick way to “estimate” exploited blocks of different volume and shape. This purpose can be reached with the study of geological and giacimentological setting, the conceiving of an innovative technique for draft field survey and a final data analysis, comparing results with traditional methods. This work presents first results after one year of employment of this application: it was possible to find a strict relationship between estimated rock mass quality and exploited blocks.
