First in a series of profiles devoted to the 20th century "second generation" of Russian theatre directors, the study traces the career and artistic training of Yury Aleksandrovich Zavadsky (1894-1977), mainly focusing on the description of Zavadsky’s stage productions. As a disciple of Vakhtangov, from 1915 to 1924 Zavadsky worked as an actor, set designer and director at the Third Studio of Moscow Art Theatre. From 1924 to 1931 Stanislavsky recruited him in Moscow Art Theatre’s ensemble. Zavadsky founded and directed (1923-1936) a Theatre-Studio of his own, where the teachings of Vakhtangov were furtherly developed. From 1932 to 1935 he directed the Red Army Theatre in Moscow. Zavadsky directed the Theatre of the Moscow Soviet from 1940 until his death, also teaching as a professor of the Lunacharsky State Institute for Theatre Arts (GITIS).
