Based on primary data from Piedmont and on general statistical data, this paper discusses features of organic agriculture in Italy. In particular: i) it assesses the weight of organic farming; ii) it addresses the issues of whether organic farms are structurally different from conventional farms; iii) it analyses the marketing chains used by organic farms; iv) it discusses problems and prospects of organic farming, in particular with reference to small farms.
