This article is an introduction to the volume "The Anglicization of European Lexis". It provides an extensive background to a cross-national view of English-induced lexical borrowing, posing crucial analytical questions such as what counts as an Anglicism and terminology in this domain of contact linguistics. It highlights the topicality of this area of research, which is constantly developing and has important linguistic and cultural implications. It also offers a typology of borrowings with examples from the languages represented in the collection of essays: Armenian, Danish, French, German, Italian, Norwegian, Polish, Serbian, Spanish, Swedish. It also deals with the influence of English on phraseology and specialized vocabulary, and introduces corpus-based and corpus-driven approaches to the study of Anglicisms.
