Neutral amines-templated mesoporous silica systems impregnated with Reichardt's dye are pink in color if previously dehydrated and white if still covered with hydroxyls: the pink coloration is, however, reversibly restored by exposing the latter sample only to NH3 and amines. The mechanism of color change is discussed, and such systems are proposed as possible ammonia gas sensors.

Abstract

Neutral amines-templated mesoporous silica systems impregnated with Reichardt's dye are pink in color if previously dehydrated and white if still covered with hydroxyls: the pink coloration is, however, reversibly restored by exposing the latter sample only to NH3 and amines. The mechanism of color change is discussed, and such systems are proposed as possible ammonia gas sensors.
