The interaction of Re2(CO)10 with zeolite Na-Y was studied by means of FTIR spectroscopy. Three species of supported metal carbonyl were found and assigned to (I) slightly perturbed (physisorbed) Re2(CO)10 molecules, (II) Re2(CO)10 O-bonded to zeolitic Na+ ions via a CO ligand and (III) more perturbed Re2(CO)10 molecules encaged inside the faujasite supercages. Upon thermolysis at 630 K the zeolite-supported metal carbonyl was completely decarbonylated. The remaining metal particles were detected spectroscopically by CO adsorption at room temperature.
