Abstract

The spin-isospin volume responses of a finite nucleus are evaluated in the random phase approximation framework, utilizing a harmonic oscillator basis. Particular emphasis is given to the mixing between the longitudinal (σ⋅q) and transverse (σ×q) couplings, which arise at the nuclear surface. We show that it reduces somewhat the contrast between the two spin responses. We compare the calculated transverse response with the experimental one extracted from deep inelastic electron scattering.
