The role of surgical versus conservative treatment in cervical spine injuries is still controversial. As a matter of fact, different conservative and surgical approaches have been suggested. In this study 92 patients with cervical spine injuries surgically treated by an anterior approach are reported. Mortality rate and incidence of surgical and systemic complications (pulmonary or urinary infections, deep venous thrombosis) are analyzed and compared to data reported in the literature. It is concluded that surgical stabilization, allowing an earlier mobilization, results in more proficient physical rehabilitation, decreases the incidence of systemic complications and improves the psychological acceptance of the disability.
