The paper presents a methodology for the characterisation of particular touristic structures, the Mountain huts, and for the collecting, updating and communication of the information on their management. This work is carried out thanks to the participation of the Department of Commodity Science to the Italy-Switzerland Transfrontier cooperation project 2007-2013 V.E.T.T.A. – Valorisation of Experiences and Transfrontier Tourism products at medium and high Altitude, commissioned by the Regione Piemonte as project leader. The general obj ctives of V.E.T.T.A. Project partners include improvement, promotion and valorisation of the tourist offer of mountain valleys within the pilot area (for Italy, Verbano-Cusio-Ossola). A field survey was carried out in the 2010 and 2011 summer seasons involving 52 Mountain huts in order to cover 100% of the huts in this territory. Referring to a 4 area check-list (100 main fields), the huts were analysed from different points of view: accessibility of the structures and the surroundings, plant engineering and technological facilities, management of environmental variables and method of delivering tourist offer. Then, all the information have been updated to a dedicated database able to contain data, images (the researches have taken more than 10.000 photos), file cards and maps. The database aims to become a useful support for Regione Piemonte because it proposes an updated “picture” and an operational tool to get, manage and update data. Thirdly, the database is useful to establish focused lines on common critical situation as, for example, the integrate water management in unfriendly environment.
