In the globalised economy the promotion of foreign direct investments (FDIs) has been widely adopted as a regional development policy. In Western Europe, in particular, investment promotion agencies (IPAs) have become recipients of an ever-increasing set of functions that go beyond their original mission: from investment promotion to the retaining and embedding of foreign investors into the domestic economy. This chapter argues that this sophistication is probably making investment agencies more and more similar to regional development agencies. Given this hypothesis the results of a comparative analysis of some renowned European IPAs are thus discussed in order to investigate the next generation of regional FDI policies.

Abstract
In the globalised economy the promotion of foreign direct investments (FDIs) has been widely adopted as a regional development policy. In Western Europe, in particular, investment promotion agencies (IPAs) have become recipients of an ever-increasing set of functions that go beyond their original mission: from investment promotion to the retaining and embedding of foreign investors into the domestic economy. This chapter argues that this sophistication is probably making investment agencies more and more similar to regional development agencies. Given this hypothesis the results of a comparative analysis of some renowned European IPAs are thus discussed in order to investigate the next generation of regional FDI policies.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
