Abstract

The notion of entropy in the applications to General Relativity is reviewed. A definition resembling the Clausius formulation in classical gas thermodynamics is considered and analyzed by an extensive use of the geometrical framework for field theories and Nöther theorem. A complete correspondence with Brown-York original formulation of the first principle of black hole thermodynamics is finally established.
