A computer system has been designed to process data from measurements of pulmonary function tests suitable for pneumology, occupational medicine and nonthoracic surgery departments. Static and dynamic lung volumes, flow-volume curve, nitrogen washout curve, airway resistance, diffusing capacity for CO, inhalatory provocation tests and blood gas analysis are taken into account. A rather complex procedure has been designed, trying to cover every possible logical situation. Qualitative rather than quantitative aspects of diagnosis have been stressed. Clinical and radiological elements are not examined. The system is structured for screening large patient populations with the basic intent of early discovery and prevention of a further evolution of lung disease. Diagnostic decisions are analysed. The flow charts of the procedure are presented in detail.
