We have reviewed the recent literature concerning asthma, caused by simple chemicals, finding that the absolute number of defined asthma cases was relatively low. 54 workers previously exposed to the inhalation of formaldehyde entered the present study. We detected a prevalence excess of airways obstruction in the smoker group with more than ten years of exposure compared to the non-smoker group, the latter having a briefer exposure time. 2 subjects showed a positive clinical history, with respect to bronchial spasm, and small airways disease at baseline test. A formaldehyde challenge was performed, but we failed to detect any significant change in lung function tests.
