Abstract

Fiction by American Women: Recent Views is a collection of substantial essays providing fresh conceptual frameworks for approaching fiction by some of America's most important women novelists. The essays cover a range of fiction, from the domestic novels of the nineteenth century to Toni Morrison, and offer a representative selection of approaches to women’s writing. My introduction comments on the evolution of attitudes toward women writers in the United States, on the situation of feminist literary criticism at that time, and on the debate about the relationship of gender to creativity.
