My essay opens with a critical introduction to the fiction of F. Scott Fitzgerald and a discussion of the literary and cultural contexts of American Literature in the 1920s. I then offer a close reading of "The Great Gatsby" with particular emphasis on Fitzgerald’s treatment of theme of the American Dream, his complex experimentation with point of view, his use of the party both as a structuring principle and as a symbolic embodiment of the 1920s, the blend of Romanticism and Realism in his vision, style and symbols, the principal themes of time, aspiration and loss, the mythic stature of his protagonist.
