In this chapter I propose a sociological analysis of the phenomenon of New Monastic Communities in Italy. My aim is to demonstrate that, in an attempt to face up to the challenges of modernity, NMCs have become interpreters of the process of “the invention of tradition”, whose outcomes often arouse mistrust not only among “legitimate heirs” of monasticism but also among the ecclesiastical authorities who are institutionally delegated to value their authenticity.

Abstract

In this chapter I propose a sociological analysis of the phenomenon of New Monastic Communities in Italy. My aim is to demonstrate that, in an attempt to face up to the challenges of modernity, NMCs have become interpreters of the process of “the invention of tradition”, whose outcomes often arouse mistrust not only among “legitimate heirs” of monasticism but also among the ecclesiastical authorities who are institutionally delegated to value their authenticity.
