This is a history of the Italian economy reconstructed through its entrepreneurs.Focusing on the 20° century,this study draws on a sample of 2,400 entrepreneurs. They worked in different regions and different economic sectors (in industry, in agriculture, in craftsmanship, in services, etc.). Many were self-made men, sometimes they were immigrants, others were heirs of entrepreneurial dynasties. In this way continuity in some important historical processes comes to light and it also emerges that Italy’s economic development is the result of an evolution which began a long time ago.
