During 2011 a thorough research upon Piedmontese region was carried out which aimed to envisage action policies promoting pastoral livestock breeding. (Propast project 2011-2013 financed by Regione Piemonte). This initiative plans to protect and safeguard traditional livestock breeding systems by strengthening the principle of importance of safeguarding this business by promoting, at the same time, the full identification of shepherd figure. Interviews to Piedmont region shepherds were made in order to raise, during both common and individual debates, problems and urgencies concerning the up-to-date situation of western Alps’ pastoral systems. Further interviews, directly made on mountain pastures, showed several critical situations among which significant cases of predations by wolves. From the initial data it comes out the necessity to develop supports, reference frames and economic exploitation of livestock productions suitable to make shepherds well-disposed towards cohabitation measures with the predator. Public opinion should also be conveniently trained and kept informed through a good deal of communication actions to counterbalance the wolves ‘popularity by means of initiatives meant to give access to information upon shepherds’ life conditions and availability of actual aspects (such as landscape, products and traditions) of traditional livestock breeding activities. During the research the protagonists have come out with minor visibility aspects, even if particularly important, thus widening the insight of socio-psychological impact to major subjects and considerations so that the overall sustainability is higher. Thanks to this initiative, the Piedmont livestock breeding system aims to recover not only an economic, but also ecological and cultural situation depressed since decades. Eventually the research aims to propose the creation of professional profiles which should support the livestock breeding activity and its strategic development, according to the “French” model (e.g. shepherd school), in order to build a reference frame for the modern livestock breeding system.
