Leaf explants of P. obtusifolia variegata, culrtured in vitro on MS medium supplemented with 1 ppm BA, produced adventitious shoots in which variegation pattern was absent. The origin of these shoots was confined within or nearby the upper epidermal tissue, mainly constituted of wild type (non mutated) cells. Alternatively, growing axillary buds on a medium without hormones, normally variegated shoots and then plants were obtained. These differences have been interpreted in the light of the chimerical origin of the variegation that could be perpetuated when the cells of the different genotypes follow a concerted pattern of development, operative in the meristems but not in the adventitious organogenesis.

Abstract
Leaf explants of P. obtusifolia variegata, culrtured in vitro on MS medium supplemented with 1 ppm BA, produced adventitious shoots in which variegation pattern was absent. The origin of these shoots was confined within or nearby the upper epidermal tissue, mainly constituted of wild type (non mutated) cells. Alternatively, growing axillary buds on a medium without hormones, normally variegated shoots and then plants were obtained. These differences have been interpreted in the light of the chimerical origin of the variegation that could be perpetuated when the cells of the different genotypes follow a concerted pattern of development, operative in the meristems but not in the adventitious organogenesis.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
