What Dictionaries Leave Out: New Non-Adapted Anglicisms in Italian

The present work is aimed at detecting new non-adapted Anglicisms which are not included in recent Italian monolingual dictionaries but which seem familiar enough to qualify for inclusion in prospective updating. The search for non-adapted Anglicisms was carried out on a large corpus of Italian newspaper language, i.e. La Repubblica corpus, by means of n-gram based queries. Since the La Repubblica corpus covers a time frame of sixteen years – between 1985 and 2000 – whereas the dictionaries consulted were all published between 2003 and 2006, the time span considered should have been reasonably sufficient for editors and publishers to detect and include non-adapted Anglicisms in their dictionaries.
