False Anglicisms, which are often believed to be real English words, are in fact autonomous creations of the Italian language. In this study false Anglicisms are examined from the perspective of translation, focusing in particular on the word jolly, which is the ellipsis of the English compound jolly joker. The meanings of jolly in Italian are illustrated and compared with the meanings of the same word in English. Then some Italian synonyms of jolly are discussed and English translation equivalents are considered. Definitions are taken from Italian and English monolingual and bilingual dictionaries as well as from the HF corpus, a corpus of Italian newspaper texts expressly compiled to study false Anglicisms.

Abstract
False Anglicisms, which are often believed to be real English words, are in fact autonomous creations of the Italian language. In this study false Anglicisms are examined from the perspective of translation, focusing in particular on the word jolly, which is the ellipsis of the English compound jolly joker. The meanings of jolly in Italian are illustrated and compared with the meanings of the same word in English. Then some Italian synonyms of jolly are discussed and English translation equivalents are considered. Definitions are taken from Italian and English monolingual and bilingual dictionaries as well as from the HF corpus, a corpus of Italian newspaper texts expressly compiled to study false Anglicisms.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
